GEN-I Sonce Accelerates Energy Project Development in Romania

21/08/2026

GEN-I Sonce has reached an important milestone in the development of the Gheorgheni project with the signing of a full Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract with WALDEVAR Energy and the official commencement of construction works on site. The project is part of GEN-I Sonce’s strategy to develop energy infrastructure projects across Southeast Europe.

Project Gheorgheni is a flagship development for GEN-I Sonce and its largest project currently under construction in the Romanian market. The project is a standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) of 55 MW / 220 MWh, located in Gheorgheni, Romania. It benefits from a prime grid connection point, secured land ownership, and granted permits and grid connection rights, which make it a high-quality, investment-ready asset.

The contract has been signed by Gregor Hudohmet, CEO of GEN-I Sonce, and Cristian Dragomir, CEO of WALDEVAR Energy.

Romania is currently one of the most promising markets in Europe for energy storage development. GEN-I Sonce develops projects in this market with a focus on technical quality, reliability, and durable investment value. Project Gheorgheni reflects that approach through its grid position, Tier 1 BESS equipment, and a contractual structure built to satisfy institutional financing requirements.

Utility-scale storage changes both project economics and system operation. By absorbing surplus renewable output during periods of peak generation and releasing it when demand and prices rise, a BESS hedges against price cannibalization and negative pricing. Beyond arbitrage, storage assets earn revenue from ancillary services, including frequency regulation and system balancing. Systems equipped with grid-forming capability can also provide synthetic inertia, which supports system stability as conventional generation retires.

"Project Gheorgheni represents an important milestone for GEN-I Sonce and our strategy of developing advanced energy projects across the region. It demonstrates our ability to identify market opportunities, develop projects to the highest standards, and successfully bring them into the construction phase. Even more importantly, this project allows us to establish a proven and scalable delivery model that will serve as the foundation for the development of a second and third similar project. We are pleased to be working with a partner such as WALDEVAR, which shares our commitment to quality and operational excellence," said Gregor Hudohmet, CEO of GEN-I Sonce.

WALDEVAR Energy is one of the region’s leading EPC contractors. With more than 3.5 GW of completed projects delivered through its own experts and equipment fleet, WALDEVAR brings significant execution capabilities to the project. This strong in-house capacity supports efficient project execution and high standards of quality throughout construction.

The core role of GEN-I Sonce is to develop energy projects from their earliest stages to the point where they become mature, high-quality, investment-attractive infrastructure assets. Project Gheorgheni is a strong example of this approach, combining technical excellence, well-structured project development, and value creation for all stakeholders involved. The project represents an important step in the implementation of GEN-I Sonce’s long-term strategy while further strengthening the GEN-I Group’s development portfolio across Southeast European markets.
