Taking over management of 200 MW of BESS in Bulgaria

10/08/2026

At GEN-I we are strengthening our position as one of the leading providers of battery storage asset management and market optimisation services in Central and Southeastern Europe. By taking over the management of two large-scale battery storage projects in Bulgaria and signing an agreement for nine additional projects, we are significantly expanding our international footprint and accelerating growth in one of Europe’s most promising energy storage markets. The newly agreed projects will double the battery storage capacity managed by GEN-I in Bulgaria within the next year.

As the exclusive partner for asset optimisation and energy trading, we provide comprehensive commercial management services for both projects: access to electricity markets, balancing services, market optimisation and a minimum guaranteed revenue level, while also assuming the associated market risks.

In the Bulgarian town of Brusartsi, we have taken over the commercial management and market optimisation of a battery energy storage system (BESS) with an output capacity of 150 MW and storage capacity of 379 MWh. In Byala Slatina, we have taken over the management of a BESS with an output capacity of 50 MW and storage capacity of 126 MWh. The two systems, with a combined output capacity of 200 MW and storage capacity of 505 MWh, were developed and constructed by SUNOTEC, one of Europe’s leading developers of solar power plants and energy storage systems. Both facilities are already connected to the electricity grid.

Battery storage is becoming one of key pillars of the European energy transition. As renewable generation continues to grow, the ability to optimise flexibility across wholesale electricity and ancillary services markets will increasingly determine the value created by these assets.

In this context, the Brusartsi and Byala Slatina projects mark the beginning of a broader strategic partnership between GEN-I and SUNOTEC in the field of battery energy storage. Building on the success of our cooperation to date, we have signed an agreement covering nine additional BESS projects with a combined output capacity of 195 MW and storage capacity of 782 MWh. These projects are being developed by SUNOTEC in Bulgaria as part of its investment strategy and are expected to enter full commercial operation within the next twelve months.

"Our partnership with SUNOTEC confirms that GEN-I is establishing itself as one of the leading providers of commercial management and market optimisation services for battery energy storage systems in the region. The projects in Bulgaria represent an important milestone in our international growth strategy while also demonstrating our partners’ confidence in our expertise, technology and trading capabilities. With the accelerated international expansion of our portfolio, we expect to exceed 800 MW of battery storage capacity under our management by the end of 2026," said Igor Koprivnikar, Ph.D., MBA, Member of the Management Board of GEN-I d.o.o., upon signing the new agreement.

According to the Energy Risk Commodity Rankings 2026, we were named the leading power and energy commodities trader in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe for the second consecutive year. This recognition reflects our continued investment in advanced analytics, market intelligence and optimisation capabilities. We operate in 27 countries, with a trading infrastructure that combines global market access with in-depth understanding of regional market characteristics.

SUNOTEC is a global company employing more than 2,000 people worldwide, headquartered in Sofia, with offices in Munich and London, specialising in the turnkey delivery of the energy infrastructure of the future.
